Steven M. Poynot
Steven M. Poynot is Chief Executive Officer and President of Capital Bank. He has brought multiple decades of experience driving enterprise growth, scaling operations, and delivering customer-focused banking strategies across commercial banking, credit, operations, and technology.
Since joining Capital Bank in October 2022 as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and later serving as President and Chief Operating Officer, he has led the bank’s day-to-day operations while directly overseeing divisional leadership across sales, credit, branch banking, product, and operations, helping position the organization for long-term growth.
Before joining Capital Bank, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of F&M Trust overseeing Commercial and Retail Banking, Information Technology, Deposit and Loan Operations, Project Management, and Facilities.
Earlier in his career, Steven spent more than 17 years with Howard Bank, holding several executive leadership roles, including Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer and Chief Credit Officer. During that time, he played a key role in building the bank’s commercial banking infrastructure, including establishing the Credit department and Client Services Support Team.
A strong advocate for community engagement, Steven currently serves on the Board of Directors for House of Ruth Maryland as Treasurer. His prior community leadership includes ten years on the Board of the Howard County Arts Council, including service as President and Treasurer, as well as board service with the Bright Minds Foundation, supporting Howard County Public Schools. He has served on multiple community and civic committees, including the Howard County Spending Affordability Committee.
He has been recognized as a Next Leader in Banking by the Maryland Bankers Association, Howard County’s Finest 39 Under 39 by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and a Baltimore Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree.
Steven earned his Master of Business Administration from Loyola University Maryland and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Baltimore.
